PCI noncompliance or nonvalidation fee explained

A provider-assessed fee that may relate to incomplete security validation or program administration.

Independent merchant reference

What this fee could represent

A provider may charge when its records do not show completion of a defined PCI-related validation step. This fee is not equivalent to an objective security assessment.

PCI DSS obligations, merchant compliance status, and provider billing rules must be examined independently. The merchant may need a security review and a billing-record correction.

Where to investigate

Start with the relevant merchant statement line, confirm the reporting dates and amounts, and compare the description with your provider's written fee schedule. For technology or funding charges, check whether a separate vendor invoice or report contains supporting detail.

Be sure to distinguish an amount charged by a provider from the related transaction, refund, security event, or operating service. Similar labels can mean different things across agreements.

Three questions to ask

  1. What exactly triggered the fee according to the provider?
  2. Which validation requirements apply to this merchant environment?
  3. How can the merchant correct records and confirm future billing changes?

A mistake to avoid

Important: Paying a fee does not establish compliance; a fee alone does not prove a security failure.

Make a merchant-first decision

A single fee label rarely explains the overall suitability of a processor. Compare the charge with the business's transaction mix, billing structure, contract, customer needs, reconciliation workflow and switching costs. A reasonable outcome may be an explanation, a configuration change, renegotiation, or no change at all.
