Read more →An effective rate is a useful retrospective ratio—provided the charges and volume belong to the same scope and period.
Example: $375 in relevant charges on $15,000 in corresponding processed volume = 2.50% for that period.
Open local-only calculator →For an all-in historical ratio, define which processing-related charges belong in the numerator. Some merchants include recurring account or equipment costs; others isolate transaction-processing costs. State your scope and use it consistently.
Ensure the sales volume in the denominator is defined consistently with the charges in the numerator. Refunds, chargebacks, reserves, adjustments, taxes, and timing mismatches can affect the calculation.
The ratio does not disclose the cost of every transaction type, prove the provider is overpriced, establish card-network interchange, or predict a competitor's performance.
Two months with different card mixes, average ticket sizes, or fee events may have different ratios even when the pricing agreement is unchanged.
Compare several periods, annotate unusual events, separate fixed and variable charges, and document the provider's pricing structure. If a change is being considered, compare written proposals against a consistent transaction mix and full operational costs.
